How to Install an eSIM on iPhone (Turkey eSIM Guide)
Install your Turkey eSIM on iPhone in minutes: QR code setup, iOS settings, and the data roaming toggle explained — step by step, before you fly to Türkiye.
Updated August 15, 2026
Three things to know before you start
It connects only at your destination
Install at home, but expect “No Service” or “Activating…” until you land — that is normal. The plan wakes up when the line first finds a network at your destination.
Your QR code works exactly once
Seeing “invalid QR” after a scan almost always means the eSIM is already on your phone. Don’t rescan — open your SIM list and just switch the line on.
No internet after landing? Check Data Roaming
Turn the travel line on, set it as your mobile data line, and switch Data Roaming ON for it. This one toggle causes most “it doesn’t work” messages.
Installation steps
- 1
Buy your plan in the Turkey eSIM app
Open the Turkey eSIM app, pick the data plan that fits your trip, and complete the purchase. Your QR code and activation details appear in the app right away under your order.
- 2
Connect to Wi-Fi
Install the eSIM over a stable Wi-Fi connection before you travel, ideally at home. Installation needs internet, and you don't want to hunt for airport Wi-Fi on arrival.
- 3
Open Settings and go to Cellular
Settings Cellular Add eSIM
On your iPhone, open Settings and tap Cellular. Depending on your iOS version and region, this menu is called Cellular, Mobile Service (iOS 17 and later in some regions), or Mobile Data — they all lead to the same place.
- 4
Tap Add eSIM and choose Use QR Code
Add eSIM Use QR Code
Tap Add eSIM, then select Use QR Code. On older iOS versions this may appear as Add Cellular Plan or Add Data Plan.
- 5
Scan the QR code from the app
Display your QR code in the Turkey eSIM app on a second device, or print it, and scan it with your iPhone camera. If you only have one device, choose Enter Details Manually and copy the SM-DP+ address and activation code from the app (two long strings in your order email). On iOS 17.4 or newer there is an even shorter path: long-press the QR image in the email itself and tap Add eSIM.
- 6
Label the new line
New eSIM Custom Label
When iOS asks, give the eSIM a clear label like Travel or Türkiye so you can tell it apart from your main line. Keep your primary SIM as the default for calls and iMessage for now.
- 7
Leave the eSIM off until you land
Keep the eSIM line turned off while you're still at home so your validity period doesn't matter yet — your plan only starts counting when it first connects to a network in Türkiye.
- 8
On arrival, turn the line on and select it for data
Settings Cellular Cellular Data
When you land in Türkiye, go to Settings, tap Cellular, select your Turkey eSIM line and turn it on. Then tap Cellular Data (Mobile Data) and choose the eSIM as your data line.
- 9
Turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM line
Cellular Türkiye Data Roaming
In Settings under Cellular, open the Turkey eSIM line and switch Data Roaming on. This toggle only applies to the travel eSIM and won't trigger roaming fees — your plan is billed at local rates.
An eSIM is the easiest way to get online in Türkiye: no SIM swapping, no airport kiosk queues, and no surprise roaming bills. You buy a prepaid data plan in the Turkey eSIM app, install a digital SIM alongside your regular one, and your iPhone connects to a local network the moment you land — while your home number stays active for calls and messages.
This guide walks you through the full setup on iPhone: buying your plan, installing the eSIM with the QR code, and the two settings you flip on arrival — selecting the eSIM for mobile data and enabling Data Roaming for that line. It covers iPhone XS, XR and every newer model, and notes where menu names differ between iOS versions.
Set aside about five minutes for the installation. The important part is doing it over Wi-Fi before your trip: your plan’s validity only starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in Türkiye, so installing early costs you nothing and saves you the hassle of setting things up at the airport.
Before you start
- iPhone XS, XR or newer with eSIM support
- Carrier-unlocked iPhone
- Stable Wi-Fi connection
- Turkey eSIM app installed on your phone
- A data plan purchased in the Turkey eSIM app
Troubleshooting
The QR code won't scan. What can I do?
Increase the screen brightness on the device showing the code, hold your iPhone about 20–30 cm away, and make sure the whole code is in frame. If it still fails, choose Enter Details Manually in the eSIM setup and copy the SM-DP+ address and activation code from the Turkey eSIM app.
The QR code says invalid, already used, or the install fails on a second try.
An activation code is single-use, so this error almost always means the first scan already worked and the eSIM is on the phone. Do not keep rescanning. Open the phone's SIM list (the cellular or SIM manager screen) or My eSIMs in the Turkey eSIM app: if the line is listed, the install is done — turn the line on, give it mobile data and enable Data Roaming instead of installing again.
I see "eSIM Cannot Be Added" or no Add eSIM option at all.
Your iPhone is either carrier-locked or doesn't support eSIM. Check under Settings, General, About — if an EID number is listed, the hardware supports eSIM. If your phone is locked, contact your home carrier to unlock it before installing; a locked iPhone will refuse third-party eSIMs.
I landed in Türkiye but have no service on the eSIM.
First confirm the eSIM line is turned on and selected as your data line, and that Data Roaming is enabled for it. Then toggle Airplane Mode on and off to force a fresh network search. If it still won't connect, go to the eSIM line's Network Selection, turn off Automatic, and pick an available Turkish network manually.
Will I be charged roaming fees when I enable Data Roaming?
No. The Data Roaming switch is just how iOS allows a line to use partner networks — your Turkey eSIM plan is prepaid at local rates, so there are no extra roaming charges. Do make sure Data Roaming stays off on your primary home SIM to avoid charges from your regular carrier.
Can I keep my regular number active for calls and WhatsApp?
Yes. Leave your primary SIM turned on for calls and SMS while the eSIM handles data. WhatsApp stays linked to your existing number regardless of which SIM provides the data connection.
Do I have to scan the QR code at all?
No. In the Turkey eSIM app, open My eSIMs, tap your plan and tap Install — the profile installs on the same phone with no camera involved. The QR route exists for installing from a second screen; both end in the identical profile, and the steps after the install are the same either way.
