How to Install an eSIM on iPad (Turkey eSIM Guide)

Add your Turkey eSIM to a Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad: the Cellular Data setup, direct in-app install with no QR code, and data roaming for your trip.

How to Install an eSIM on iPad (Turkey eSIM Guide)

Three things to know before you start

It connects only at your destination

Install at home, but expect “No Service” or “Activating…” until you land — that is normal. The plan wakes up when the line first finds a network at your destination.

Your QR code works exactly once

Seeing “invalid QR” after a scan almost always means the eSIM is already on your phone. Don’t rescan — open your SIM list and just switch the line on.

No internet after landing? Check Data Roaming

Turn the travel line on, set it as your mobile data line, and switch Data Roaming ON for it. This one toggle causes most “it doesn’t work” messages.

Installation steps

  1. 1

Download the Turkey eSIM app before you travel

Install the Turkey eSIM app on the iPad and buy your data plan while you're still on home Wi-Fi. Your eSIM profile is ready in the app the moment checkout finishes — no QR code and no confirmation email to dig up later.

  2. 2

    Connect to Wi-Fi

Do the install at home, before you fly. Downloading the eSIM profile needs an internet connection, and getting it done early means you land in Türkiye already connected instead of hunting for airport Wi-Fi.

  3. 3

Open Settings and go to Cellular Data

On the iPad, open Settings and tap Cellular Data. If the iPad has ever carried a physical SIM, that line is listed here too, above the eSIM options.

  4. 4

    Tap Add eSIM

Tap Add eSIM. iPadOS offers to scan a QR code — you won't need it.

  5. 5

Install directly from the Turkey eSIM app

Skip the camera: open the Turkey eSIM app instead, go to My eSIMs, tap your plan and tap Install. The profile downloads onto the iPad with no code to scan or type.

  6. 6

    Confirm and label the line

iPadOS shows the plan it found — confirm, then give it a minute to download and register. Label it something recognizable like Türkiye, and leave it switched off until your trip.

  7. 7

On arrival, turn on the eSIM and set it as your data line

When you land in Türkiye, go back to Settings, Cellular Data, switch the Turkey eSIM on, and select it as the active line. The iPad only handles data, so there's no separate call line to manage — just make sure the Turkey eSIM is the one selected.

  8. 8

Turn on data roaming for the eSIM

In Cellular Data, open the Turkey eSIM line and switch Data Roaming on. This adds no cost — your plan is prepaid at local rates, and the toggle affects nothing but the travel eSIM.

Before anything else: eSIM only exists on iPads with Wi-Fi + Cellular. The Wi-Fi-only version has no cellular radio inside it, so there’s no eSIM option to find and no update that will ever add one — if that’s your model, this guide doesn’t apply, and you’re better off relying on your phone for a connection in Türkiye. If your iPad has ever shown a Cellular Data section in Settings, or came with a nano-SIM tray, you have the right model.

An iPad eSIM is also data-only: it has no phone number, so it can’t make calls or send SMS. That’s not a downside for most trips — plenty of travelers use the iPad as a second screen next to their phone, running maps or translation on its own connection, while others prefer to travel with just the iPad and handle calls and messages over Wi-Fi calling or an app instead.

This guide covers the full setup: buying your plan in the Turkey eSIM app, installing the eSIM through Cellular Data in Settings with no QR code needed, and the one setting to flip on arrival — turning on data roaming for the line. Do it over Wi-Fi before you fly, at home.

Installation takes about five minutes. Your plan’s validity only starts the first time the eSIM connects to a network in Türkiye, so there’s no downside to installing early — and no upside to waiting until you’re standing in arrivals.

Before you start

  • Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad — the Wi-Fi-only model has no cellular hardware and cannot use an eSIM at all
  • iPad not locked to a carrier
  • Stable Wi-Fi connection
  • Turkey eSIM app installed on the iPad with a plan already purchased

Troubleshooting

There's no Cellular Data option in Settings at all.

That means this iPad is a Wi-Fi-only model — it has no cellular radio built in, so there's no eSIM option to find and no software update that adds one. Check the box or Settings, General, About: if it lists a model with no cellular capability, you'll need to use your phone for a data connection on this trip instead.

Can I make calls or send texts with the iPad's eSIM?

No. An iPad eSIM is data-only — it has no phone number attached. If you want calling or SMS while traveling, keep using your phone's line, or make calls over the iPad's data connection through an app like WhatsApp or FaceTime instead.

Do I have to scan a QR code at all?

No. In the Turkey eSIM app, open My eSIMs, tap your plan and tap Install — the profile installs on the same iPad with no camera involved. iPadOS still offers a QR scan option in the Add eSIM menu, but it's not the route this app needs.

The eSIM downloaded, but I get an error mid-setup.

This usually means the connection dropped during the download or the iPad is carrier-locked. Confirm you're on stable Wi-Fi and the iPad is unlocked, restart it, and try installing again — your eSIM profile stays valid until it's successfully installed once.

I'm in Türkiye but data isn't working.

Open Cellular Data and check that the Turkey eSIM is switched on and selected as the active line, then confirm Data Roaming is enabled for it. If it still won't connect, toggle Airplane mode on and off, or restart the iPad to force it to register on a Turkish network.

My cellular iPad was bought through a carrier — will that block the eSIM?

It can. Some cellular iPads sold through a carrier, especially on an installment plan, are locked to that carrier even though nothing on the device suggests it, and a locked iPad will refuse a second, third-party eSIM. Check the carrier lock status in Settings, General, About before you travel, and ask the carrier for an unlock if needed — it's free once the device is paid off in most markets.
