What is an eSIM?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card built directly into your phone. Instead of pushing a plastic chip into a tray, you download your mobile plan — usually by scanning a QR code — and you're connected. Here's everything a traveler needs to know.
How an eSIM works
Every modern phone with eSIM support contains a small, permanent chip that can securely store one or more mobile plans. When you buy a plan, the carrier sends you an activation code — with Turkey eSIM it arrives by e-mail and sits in your order, ready to scan. Your phone downloads the plan onto the chip, and from that moment it behaves exactly like a normal SIM card.
Because the eSIM sits alongside your physical SIM, your phone can run both at once: your home number stays reachable while the eSIM carries your data in Türkiye.
eSIM vs. physical SIM card

iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and many other recent Android devices support eSIM. Some phones sold in certain regions are exceptions, so it's worth checking before you buy a plan.
