Google Pixel eSIM Setup for Turkey: What to Check First
Before adding a travel eSIM on a Google Pixel for Turkey, check the lock, the SIMs list and the per-line roaming switch. The settings in order.

On a Google Pixel, the eSIM for Turkey is added under Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, but the setting to check first is not on that screen: it is whether the phone is carrier-unlocked, followed by the Roaming switch on the new line’s own page, which a travel eSIM needs turned on. Pixel keeps every line on its own settings page, so the order you check things in matters more than on other phones. Here are the checks in the order we would do them, then the install itself.
First: is the Pixel unlocked?
A Pixel bought directly from Google is sold unlocked in the markets where Google sells it. A Pixel bought through a carrier, or on a carrier contract, may be locked to that carrier until the carrier releases it. A locked phone can refuse to download or activate another provider’s eSIM, and that is not something you can solve after landing.
Android does not give one simple screen that says “unlocked”. The reliable route is to ask your carrier, or to check your contract. Do it a week before travelling, because some carriers process unlock requests over several days. While you are at it, confirm that your Pixel model supports eSIM at all with our guide to checking whether your phone supports eSIM; older and some regional models differ.
Second: what is already in the SIMs list
Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. This list is Pixel’s eSIM manager: it shows your physical SIM if you have one, every downloaded eSIM, and which of them are switched on. Some travellers find old eSIMs from previous trips here.
Look at it before you add anything. A Pixel can store several eSIMs, but the number of lines that can be active at the same time depends on the model. If an old travel eSIM is switched on, turn it off so it does not compete with the new line. Do not delete anything yet: an old profile you delete cannot be brought back without the provider that issued it.
Third: the install
Connect to stable Wi-Fi, then in the SIMs screen tap Add SIM (on some versions a plus sign). When the phone offers to look for a carrier SIM, choose the option to download a SIM instead, then scan the QR code from a second screen or a printout. If scanning is not possible, look for the option to enter the code manually and type the details exactly as provided.
The Pixel downloads the profile and asks you to confirm. It may then ask whether to use the new line for mobile data; you can answer now or set it in the next step. When it finishes, the SIMs list shows the new line next to your home line.
Fourth: the settings on the new line’s page
| Setting | Where on a Pixel | What to set for Turkey |
|---|---|---|
| Use SIM | The new line’s own page in SIMs | On |
| Roaming | The new line’s own page | On; a travel eSIM needs it |
| Mobile data | Per line, or in the SIMs overview | On for the travel line only |
| Data switching between lines | The line’s page, if your version shows it | Off |
| Calls and SMS preference | The SIMs overview | Your home line |
| Name and colour | The line’s own page | “Travel” and a colour you will recognise |
Tap the new line in the SIMs list to open its page. That page is where the Roaming switch lives, and it is the one setting a travel eSIM depends on to connect. If your Android version shows an option to switch mobile data between lines by availability, turn it off so the Pixel does not fall back to your home line for data.
Your home line: calls yes, data roaming no
Open the home line’s page next. If you want calls and texts to keep reaching you on your own number, leave Use SIM on and set Calls preference and SMS preference to that line. Turn off mobile data and roaming for it if you want to avoid your carrier’s roaming charges; incoming calls and texts then follow whatever terms your carrier sets for abroad.
The Samsung version of these choices sits in different menus; if someone in your group uses a Galaxy, our Samsung Galaxy setup guide for Turkey shows theirs.
After landing, and what not to reset
Turn off airplane mode when phones are allowed and give the Pixel a minute to find a network for the travel line. If it does not connect, return to the travel line’s page and check Use SIM, Roaming and Mobile data, then restart.
Avoid the reset menus while troubleshooting. Pixel’s Reset options include an entry for erasing downloaded eSIMs, and choosing it removes your travel line along with the rest. Contact support before deleting anything. When a plan’s validity starts is set out in our FAQ.
Install at home, check twice
The Pixel flow is short, but its settings live on several pages, so the best place to go through them is your own sofa. Compare data sizes for the trip on our plans and prices page.
Turkey eSIM is installed at home over Wi-Fi before departure, so nothing has to be done on arrival in Turkey: no SIM shop, no QR code to hunt for, no passport registration at a counter. Every Pixel screen, in order, is in our Google Pixel installation guide.
