Is eSIM Banned in Türkiye? No — Here's What Was Blocked
eSIM is not banned in Türkiye. In July 2025 some sellers' websites were blocked — the technology works, and our service is unaffected.

No. eSIM is not banned in Türkiye, and it works there without any problem. What happened in July 2025 was narrower than the headlines: the telecoms regulator blocked access, from inside the country, to the websites of some large international eSIM sellers. The technology itself is legal, Turkish operators sell it themselves, and a travel eSIM connects to Turkish networks the moment you land.
Last checked: September 2026.
The short answer, in plain terms
If you are sitting on a half-finished checkout wondering whether to press buy: press buy. Nothing about eSIM is illegal in Türkiye. Turkcell, Vodafone Türkiye and Türk Telekom all sell eSIM to their own customers, and no country outlaws a technology its three national operators sell in every high-street shop. On the ground it is ordinary: the profile installs and the phone registers on a Turkish network. The confusion comes from one regulatory decision that reached a handful of company websites — not the technology, not the app stores, not your handset.
What actually happened in July 2025
On 10 July 2025 the telecoms regulator, the BTK, issued a decision that made the websites of some large international eSIM sellers unreachable from inside Türkiye. Turkish technology media reported it the next day — DonanımHaber and Medyascope both covered it on 11 July 2025 — and Airalo was among the names they listed.
We will not go further than that. No official list was published, so the figures in one article contradict the next, and no reason was given, so every explanation of why is a guess. What is verifiable is narrow: some websites became unreachable from inside the country, while app store listings stayed up, profiles already on phones kept working, and no rule was made about travellers using an eSIM.
Where Turkey eSIM stands: not affected
Our side is simple: Turkey eSIM is not restricted in Türkiye or anywhere else. Our website opens, our app works, and buying, installing, topping up and reaching support all work from inside the country exactly as they do from Berlin or Dubai. The traveller who lands without data, notices at passport control and buys from the arrivals hall on airport Wi-Fi is a normal part of our week. We will not promise anything about the future — nobody can say what a regulator will decide — but nothing in our purchase, install or support path is blocked.
The myths, and what is actually true
These are the sentences we are asked about most.
| What people search | What is actually true |
|---|---|
| “eSIM is banned in Türkiye” | No. The technology is legal and all three Turkish operators sell it |
| “My eSIM stops working when I land” | No. A travel eSIM registers on Turkish networks normally |
| “eSIM apps were pulled from the app stores” | No. The apps are still listed; some sellers’ websites became unreachable inside Türkiye |
| “I need a VPN to use an eSIM there” | No, and we do not recommend one. With a seller that is not blocked, nothing extra is needed |
| “After three months my phone gets blocked” | That is the separate 120-day rule for phones used with a Turkish SIM, still in force in 2026 — not an eSIM rule |
| “If it does not work I lose my money” | Not with us. The refund terms below say what comes back, and when |
Install before you fly, or after you land
Both work with us. Installing at home the night before is the comfortable option: putting an eSIM profile on a phone needs an internet connection — on an iPhone, Apple asks for Wi-Fi at the setup step — so home is the easy moment. Install it, leave the line switched off, and switch it on when the plane doors open.
If you did not get to it before boarding, airport Wi-Fi at Istanbul, Sabiha Gökçen, Antalya or Izmir does the same job in two minutes — convenience, not a workaround, since nothing about our install path is blocked. Most people prefer the app anyway — plan, QR code, remaining data and the top-up button in one place, so when data runs out on day five you are three taps from more. The install guides cover iPhone, Samsung and Pixel; does my phone support eSIM is the faster check if you are unsure about your handset.
The 120-day phone rule is a different thing
Almost every “Türkiye blocks phones” story a traveller meets is this rule, not the website decision. Türkiye registers handsets: a phone brought in from abroad and used with a Turkish SIM card gets 120 days of service before its IMEI has to be registered, and that rule still stands in 2026. It concerns the device and a local line, not eSIM technology, and the same regulator runs it — probably why the two stories merged.
What your own obligations are depends on your handset and your stay; the BTK’s own channels are where to check. Either way, it is no reason to avoid an eSIM. For the local-operator side, Turkcell’s eSIM for tourists explains how a Turkish line is sold.
If something goes wrong: support and the refund
Our terms say two things, and we would rather you read them than take our summary. If the eSIM has not been installed and no data has been used, you can ask for a full refund within 15 days of purchase, no reason needed. If an eSIM cannot be installed or activated on a compatible phone, that is ours to put right — support works it through with you, and you are not left holding something that will not run. Requests go through in-app support, WhatsApp or the support e-mail; the terms page is the wording that governs it.
The real question behind the search is not “is the technology legal”, but “if this turns out to be a mess, am I out of pocket”. You are not.
What to do now
Pick the data allowance that matches your trip and buy it before you fly — the plans are here — then install it over home Wi-Fi the night before. That is the whole procedure: no workaround, no airport SIM bought as insurance, no planning around a block that never touched us.
