Turkish Airlines' Free Stopover Tour: Is the Bosphorus Included?
How Turkish Airlines' Touristanbul layover tour works: who qualifies, where you register, why entry rules apply, and how to see the Bosphorus on your own.

Turkish Airlines runs a free guided city tour for some international transfer passengers at Istanbul Airport, called Touristanbul — but whether a Bosphorus element is part of it depends on the itinerary running on your day, not on a fixed promise. The airline publishes the current tours, time slots and eligibility conditions on its Touristanbul page; that page, not a review from three years ago, is the only reliable answer.
What reviews tend to skip is the mechanism: who qualifies, where you sign up, and the entry step that comes before any tour bus. Here is how it fits together, and what to do if the boat is not on the list.
What Touristanbul is, and what it is not
Touristanbul is the airline’s own programme for passengers connecting between two international Turkish Airlines flights through Istanbul Airport. It is a group tour on a fixed schedule: you register, join a guided group at a set time, visit the stops of that slot’s itinerary, and return to the airport with the group.
It is not a hotel stopover, and it is not a private tour you can reshape. Turkish Airlines also markets a separate stopover offer that involves hotel nights; its conditions are different and listed on its own page. Mixing the two up is how travellers arrive at the wrong desk expecting a room.
Who qualifies
Eligibility is set by the airline and checked at the desk: the kind of ticket, the length of the layover, and the fact that both flights are international. The exact layover window that qualifies and any ticket-class conditions are on the Touristanbul page — check them against your own booking before you plan anything around the tour, last checked: October 2026.
If your layover is just outside the window, the desk can refuse you even with seats free. Plan as if you will be on your own, and treat a confirmed place on the tour as a bonus.
The entry step comes first
The tour leaves the airport, so you have to pass passport control and be admitted to Turkey before you can join it. Whether you need a visa or an e-Visa for that entry is a question about your passport, not your ticket: as of 2026, check your nationality’s entry rules on the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs site and use only the official e-Visa portal if one applies. Our guide to telling the official Turkey e-Visa portal from markup sites shows how to spot the look-alikes.
Admission is decided by the border officer, not by the airline’s tour programme. Being registered for Touristanbul does not change that.
Is the Bosphorus on it?
The itineraries change with the time slot and the season, and the airline revises them without notice to anyone reading an old review. If seeing the Bosphorus is the reason you want the tour, read the stops listed for your slot and look for a boat or a waterfront stop by name. If neither is there, assume it is not included.
Do not rely on a review that mentions a boat ride; it may describe a slot or a year that no longer runs.
Tour vs doing the Bosphorus yourself
| Factor | Touristanbul group tour | Your own Bosphorus trip | Staying airside |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost to you | Free if eligible | Transport and boat fare | None |
| Bosphorus on water | Only if the slot lists it | Yes, you choose the boat | No |
| Entry to Turkey needed | Yes | Yes | No |
| Control of timing | None, group schedule | Full | Full |
| Risk to your connection | Managed by the tour return | Yours to manage | Lowest |
| Where to verify | Touristanbul page | Ferry operator’s timetable | Airport and airline pages |
Doing the boat part on your own
If the tour does not include the water, the public option is a ferry from the European-side piers. Our guide to which Bosphorus cruise to take in Istanbul compares the short loops, the long tour and the regular commuter ferries, and which one suits a few hours in the city.
The constraint is the return. Check the current journey time between the airport and the city on the official transport pages before you leave, and work back from the latest time Turkish Airlines asks you to be at the airport for your onward flight. If the arithmetic is tight, the Bosphorus can wait for another trip; if the layover is long but outside the tour window, our Istanbul Airport overnight layover guide covers what is available inside the terminal.
Keeping your phone useful between two flights
A layover tour is exactly when a working phone matters: the desk’s meeting-time message, the group guide’s WhatsApp, a live map on the walk back to the meeting point, and your airline app’s gate change for the onward flight. Airport Wi-Fi stays behind when the bus pulls out.
With Turkey eSIM you install the plan at home over Wi-Fi before departure, so nothing has to be done during the layover — no QR to hunt, no shop counter, no passport registration between flights. The setup steps for each phone are in our eSIM installation guides, and plan sizes are on the pricing page. For a layover, a small plan is enough; you need maps and messages, not streaming.
