Istanbul Airport Public Transport for a Late-Night Arrival

If you land in Istanbul in the middle of the night, the short answer is that you should not plan around the metro. The airport coaches and the city’s night buses run when the rail lines do not, and both airports keep a taxi rank going around the clock — but the metro has a first and last train, and those times are published by the operator rather than by your hotel. The single most useful thing you can do before you fly is look up the current first and last departures for the line you want, because everything else follows from that one fact.

First: work out which airport you are actually landing at

This sounds obvious and it catches people out constantly. Istanbul has two commercial airports on opposite sides of the city, roughly 80 km apart by road:

• Istanbul Airport (IST) sits northwest of the centre on the European side, near Arnavutköy. Most long-haul and most Turkish Airlines flights use it.
• Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) sits southeast on the Asian side, near Pendik. A large share of low-cost and domestic traffic uses it.

Your booking shows the three-letter code; check it against your hotel’s side of the city before you choose a transfer. Arriving at SAW with a hotel in Sultanahmet at two in the morning is a different and much longer night than arriving at IST.

What the rail option looks like, and why it may not help you

From IST, the M11 metro runs from under the terminal to Gayrettepe, where you change to the M2 for Şişhane and Taksim. From SAW, the M4 runs from the terminal towards Kadıköy, with an interchange onto Marmaray at Ayrılık Çeşmesi if you need to cross to the European side by tunnel.

Both are cheap, both are immune to traffic, and neither runs all night. Istanbul’s rail lines close for a few hours and reopen early; the exact first and last services differ by line and change from time to time. Do not take a time from a blog, a forum or an AI answer — including this one. Metro İstanbul publishes the timetable for each line, and the city administration (İBB) publishes changes and holiday variations. That is the source worth two minutes of your time.

The options that do run at night

Airport coaches. HAVAIST serves IST and HAVABUS serves SAW, each running a set of routes to fixed points in the city. They are the easiest choice with heavy luggage because you load the case once and sit down, and their schedules are designed around flight arrivals rather than a commuter day. Each operator publishes its own route list and departure times.

Night buses. Istanbul’s municipal bus network keeps a reduced night service running, and it reaches both airports. This is the cheapest way into town at four in the morning, and also the slowest and the hardest to navigate if it is your first visit. Fares are paid with an İstanbulkart.

Taxis and ride-hailing. The official rank outside arrivals operates whenever there are flights. Fares are metered; insist on the meter running, and ignore anyone who approaches you inside the terminal offering a ride. Taxi apps used in Istanbul are useful at night mainly because the journey is recorded and the destination is typed rather than explained in a second language.

Pre-booked private transfer. The one option whose value is highest precisely at night: a named driver waiting in arrivals removes every decision at the worst hour for making them. Book it through your hotel or a recognised operator, not a message received after you land.

The İstanbulkart question

One card covers metro, tram, bus, ferry and funicular, and it is sold from machines in both airports’ arrivals areas. Buy it before you leave the terminal: it is the only queue of the night you can genuinely avoid. A single card can usually be tapped for more than one passenger, which matters if you are a family arriving at an hour when the machines are unattended and you would rather buy one card than four.

Why your hotel’s check-in time matters more than the transfer

A night arrival has a second problem that no transport choice solves: most hotels will not put you in a room at 03:00 unless you have told them you are coming. Message the property with your flight number and arrival time before you travel, ask whether reception is staffed overnight, and ask whether they will hold luggage if the room is not ready. This single message changes more about the night than choosing between a bus and a taxi.

Being online before you step into the terminal

Every one of the decisions above is easier with a working data connection: checking whether the last train has already gone, opening the coach operator’s departure list, calling a taxi, or messaging a hotel that your flight was delayed. One last check before you fly

Write down three things and keep them offline: the name and district of your accommodation in Turkish script, the airport code on your ticket, and the official timetable link for the line you intend to use. If your flight is delayed by two hours, that list is what lets you re-plan at the gate instead of at the kerb.
