Yes, you can fly from Istanbul to Cappadocia: the region is served by two airports, Nevşehir Kapadokya and Kayseri Erkilet, and the better one for you is the one whose flight times and transfer suit your hotel town — not the one a forum calls “closer”. Nevşehir is the airport named after the region; Kayseri is the airport of a large city on the region’s eastern side. Both connect to the hotel towns by shuttle, taxi or rental car.

We do not quote transfer times or distances here, because they depend entirely on which town your cave hotel is in. Here is how to make the choice yourself in a few minutes.

The two airports, briefly

Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport sits on the north-western side of the region, outside the hotel towns. It is a regional airport with a smaller schedule. Kayseri Erkilet Airport serves the city of Kayseri, east of Cappadocia, and handles city traffic as well as tourists.

Both have flights from Istanbul. Which airlines fly from which Istanbul airport — Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) — and at what times changes by season, so compare schedules on Turkish Airlines, AJet and Pegasus for your travel date before you choose. The airport with the better flight time can outweigh any difference in transfer length.

Start from your hotel town

Cappadocia is not one place. Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp, Avanos, Ortahisar and Mustafapaşa are separate towns, each with its own position relative to the two airports. Put your hotel’s address into a live route planner and measure the drive from each airport. That number, checked by you, is the one that matters.

You do not have to use the same airport both ways. If the best inbound flight lands at Kayseri and the best outbound one leaves from Nevşehir, book them separately as two one-way tickets and arrange each transfer on its own. Check the fare rules first: two one-way tickets can cost more or less than a return, and the airline’s own site shows both options side by side.

If you have not booked the hotel yet, our guide to what to expect from a cave hotel in Cappadocia covers what to check before you choose a town.

How the shared shuttles work

From both airports, shared shuttle services run to the hotel towns, timed around flight arrivals. They are booked in advance — through your hotel or directly with the shuttle company — with your flight number, and they drop passengers at their hotel doors. Because they are timed to flights, they wait for a delayed arrival within limits set by the company.

Book the shuttle as soon as your flight is confirmed and give the flight number, not just the time. Ask what happens if your flight lands very late, is cancelled, or is moved to another day. The shuttle company’s answer to that question tells you how it operates.

Taxis, private transfers and rental cars

Taxis wait at both airports. A private transfer is the same journey with a pre-agreed price and a driver holding your name in arrivals; for a family or a late arrival it removes the negotiation. Rental desks operate at both airports too.

A car is worth it if you plan to explore beyond the main valleys — the underground cities, the Ihlara Valley or Soğanlı. If you are driving from Istanbul instead of flying, our Istanbul to Cappadocia driving guide covers the route, tolls and winter roads.

Arriving the day before a balloon flight

If your first morning in Cappadocia is a balloon flight, the airport choice matters more. Balloon pickups happen before dawn, so arriving late the previous evening is fine; arriving on the morning of the flight is not. Choose the flight that lands with time to spare, and tell the shuttle and the balloon operator your hotel name exactly as booked.

Our Cappadocia balloon flight guide explains how the dawn weather decision works and why one spare morning is worth building into the trip.

The phone side of a regional arrival

A regional arrival runs on messages: the shuttle company’s confirmation, the driver’s WhatsApp if your flight lands late, the hotel’s check-in instructions for a cave room down an unlit lane. At a small terminal, there may be no phone shop open when you land.

With Turkey eSIM, the plan is installed at home over Wi-Fi before departure, so nothing has to be done on arrival at Nevşehir or Kayseri — no QR to hunt, no shop, no passport registration — and the shuttle driver can reach you in the arrivals hall. Installation steps for your phone are in our eSIM setup guides, and plan sizes are on the pricing page. For a Cappadocia trip, leave room for the photos you will upload from the valleys.
